Run 31: Long Runs Breed a Mindset

Description

The long runs are the hardest to start mentally, but they are always the most rewarding when you finish. They take up a long portion of the day and effect the rest of the day, but these are where you feel that “runner’s high”

Thoughts

Today was my second half marathon I have had to run during my training. This run was supposed to be yesterday, but after working out for the first time in a month (and going out drinking again until 4am), my body was not physically ready to run at all. I tried to get myself going for a couple hours, but alas I spent most of the day laying on the couch and suffering the consequences of my decisions.

Opting to wait a day for the long run was the best thing I could have done. The run once again felt great, my pace was faster than the last time, and I all around felt like a beast running that distance without feeling like I was going to die. This time around, I bought some specific running gels to eat, and they made quite a whirl of difference. I could actively feel the energy that these gave me, and the energy felt more consistent and sustained compared to the snickers bar I ate last time.

After the run, I felt less sore than the last time that I ran the half marathon, but it still affected my performance at work, and I felt myself a bit tired throughout the day. I am not quite sure how to get around this other than a nice big breakfast after the run. But still, feeling proud of myself, and more and more confident that I will reach my 3:30 marathon time goal (fingers crossed).
